Bouquets to Art
What better way to celebrate spring than a stroll through the de Young Museum's highly acclaimed fine art collection complemented by masterfully arranged, fresh blooms?
Beginning today through Saturday, March 17th, visit the de Young for its 28th annual floral exhibition and fundraiser, Bouquets to Art. Inspired by and paying tribute to the museum's permanent collection, displays from 150 floral designers will be featured this week.
We're thrilled to be participating again this year and honored to be displaying our piece in the Nan Tucker McEvoy wing of the museum. Margaret Koski-Kent's talented assistant, Francesca Perez, has been busy all week designing our arrangement, an homage to our beloved company founder, Mrs. McEvoy, and all that she carries, creates and inspires under her wing.
We don't want to give away any surprises, but here's an idea of what we've been working with...

You can view Francesca's masterpiece on the 2nd floor, Gallery 27 in the Nan Tucker McEvoy wing of the de Young Museum.

Extra Early Bloomers
Our annual Spring Bloomers tour is extra early this year. In fact, we set a date in April and had to surrender to the tulips and unusually warm winter weather by moving our date up several weeks to Friday, March 16th.
Here's a look at what's in store if you'd like to join us at the ranch and a few words from our Head Gardener, Margaret Koski-Kent....
It has been an unusual winter. It reminds me of the drought in the '90's when I used to say, "another beautiful day!"
Beautiful, but scary. If this is it for our winter rains, it will be a very difficult year for the gardens. Our plants do need water to produce delicious fruit and vegetables and stunning flowers. So far the daffodils are popping up in many variations on a theme of white, cream yellow and orange. So much so that we moved the date up as many of our new organic tulips are already budding.

In equal measure, our apricots and peaches have started to blossom with the rest of our fruit orchards soon to follow. It looks like Ceonothus will be out in electrifying blues, and along with mustard in the orchards and wildflowers.
Last but not least, we're seeing plenty of Nan's favorite: tulips! And we look forward to sharing them with you.

Baby Mizuna
We grow baby and micro greens throughout the year following our biodynamic calendar. Bay Area chefs and our own cooks at the ranch love using these nutrient-rich young greens to dress up gourmet dishes, but they're very accessible and approachable in everyday cooking, too. Twice a week, we send a selection of seasonal baby and micro greens to our retail shop in the San Francisco Ferry Building shop. To find out what's being delivered "fresh from the ranch," check our blog each Monday and Thursday night.
Mizuna (brassica rapa nipponosica) is a cool season Asian mustard green that's been primarily cultivated in Japan's Kyoto region. This long, feathery, saw-toothed leaf has a subtle earthiness and bright, peppery flavor that's milder than arugula. Like most young greens, baby mizuna is a nutritional powerhouse full of antioxidants, folic acid, minerals and Vitamins A & C. These elegant baby greens make an excellent garnish for meats and fish, and they're often added to mixed lettuces to enhance the flavor and health benefits of salads. Their mild flavor makes them an easy substitute for chard or kale, or you can toss them into soups and stir-fries at the end of cooking.
To tame the slightly piquant note and showcase our extra virgin olive oil, we do a simple baby green bruschetta tasting in our San Francsico Ferry Building shop fairly often.
Here's how:
1. Thinly slice Acme sweet baguette.
2. Spread bread with any soft, mild, fresh Cow's milk cheese (we often use Cowgirl Creamery's fromage blanc or fresh Jersey ricotta).
3. Season with salt.
4. Top with one leaf of baby Mizuna, drizzle with our extra virgin olive oil and enjoy!
Here are a few more ideas from our friends at Mariquita Farms and a simple potato and olive oil recipe from TheKitchn.
What's your favorite mizuna recipe?
