Baby Mizuna
We grow baby and micro greens throughout the year following our biodynamic calendar. Bay Area chefs and our own cooks at the ranch love using these nutrient-rich young greens to dress up gourmet dishes, but they're very accessible and approachable in everyday cooking, too. Twice a week, we send a selection of seasonal baby and micro greens to our retail shop in the San Francisco Ferry Building shop. To find out what's being delivered "fresh from the ranch," check our blog each Monday and Thursday night.
Mizuna (brassica rapa nipponosica) is a cool season Asian mustard green that's been primarily cultivated in Japan's Kyoto region. This long, feathery, saw-toothed leaf has a subtle earthiness and bright, peppery flavor that's milder than arugula. Like most young greens, baby mizuna is a nutritional powerhouse full of antioxidants, folic acid, minerals and Vitamins A & C. These elegant baby greens make an excellent garnish for meats and fish, and they're often added to mixed lettuces to enhance the flavor and health benefits of salads. Their mild flavor makes them an easy substitute for chard or kale, or you can toss them into soups and stir-fries at the end of cooking.
To tame the slightly piquant note and showcase our extra virgin olive oil, we do a simple baby green bruschetta tasting in our San Francsico Ferry Building shop fairly often.
Here's how:
1. Thinly slice Acme sweet baguette.
2. Spread bread with any soft, mild, fresh Cow's milk cheese (we often use Cowgirl Creamery's fromage blanc or fresh Jersey ricotta).
3. Season with salt.
4. Top with one leaf of baby Mizuna, drizzle with our extra virgin olive oil and enjoy!
Here are a few more ideas from our friends at Mariquita Farms and a simple potato and olive oil recipe from TheKitchn.

Here's a look at tomorrow's delivery!
Sustainability: Design for a Better World

We just returned from the New York International Gift Fair
and are proud to announce some exciting recognition that our 80 Acres Body Care received by the show's Sustainability: Design for a Better World initiative.
Beginning in 2008, the NYIGF started curating a special exhibit and educational series showcasing the gift industry's best eco-friendly products and business practices. In order to be included, products must meet the following criteria:
- "Green" Products: products that are manufactured or constructed with only recycled, recycleable and/or sustainable materials
- Environmentally-Friendly Production Practices: manufacturers who are using renewable or alternative sources of energy in production, including wind, sun and alternative fuels
- Socially Responsible Business Practices
- Meet NYIGF's "zero tolerance" policy for toxic products: VOC; Lead: PVC, without recommendation for use and disposal, and unless repurposed; and Aniline dyes, formaldehyde, chlorine (for textiles)
This year we submitted two products from our Lavender and Blood Orange collections and both were showcased in the Sustainability: Design for a Better World display: our newly-released Muslin Gift Sets and our popular Body Balm.
Our entire 80 Acres Body Care collection is made locally in small batches using USDA-certified organic olive oil and a rich variety of botanically sourced ingredients. We use recycled packaging as much as possible and operate a wind turbine at our olive ranch which is designed to meet 100% of our energy needs. All of our products are paraben, pthalate and sulfate-free and never tested on animals.
Well done, 80 Acres!
Food from the Heart
One of our favorite Ferry Building events is coming up and we hope you can join us!

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Food from the Heart, a benefit for Slow Food San Francisco, will be held on Friday, February 10th from 5pm until 8pm in the historic Ferry Building marketplace.
Stroll the candlelit nave with your sweetheart and enjoy music, late night shopping, sips and seasonal bites. Merchants and Marketplace restaurants will offer seasonal hors d'oeuvres to pair with delicious wines from Napa Valley Vinters and shops will be open until 8pm for you to find the perfect token for that special someone.
We've got some special tastes in store featuring our extra virgin olive oil: one savory with organic, edible flowers from our gardens and one sweet pairing with dark chocolate and a touch of sea salt.
Admission is FREE and tickets for food and wine will be sold in $2 denominations the night of the event.
