In honor of our furry friends and to highlight what we feel is an important step in our 80 Acres Body Care formulation, we ran a promotion a few weeks ago to raise money for SaveABunny, an award-winning, local non-profit dedicated to rabbit rescue.

Bunnies are near and dear to our hearts at McEvoy Ranch, as is the diverse population of wildlife, critters and pets that calls our 550-acre ranch home.

Naturally, none of our products have ever been tested on animals. We are delighted to donate over $1000 to SaveABunny. Thanks so much for all who contributed!

Tomato Starts

It’s tomato-planting time!

For the next few weeks we’ll be sending a variety of organic tomato plants down to our SF Ferry Building shop.

Add sun, water, a little TLC and enjoy the fruits of your labor in about three months with a healthy drizzle of our extra virgin olive oil.

Here’s a look at what we’ll be selling…

CHERRY/EARLY TOMATOES

Matt’s Wild – Small, grape-sized red cherry tomato that is packed with sweet, juicy flavor and produces clusters of fruit. Plants can tolerate a bit of cooler weather. 65-70 days, indeterminate

New Girl – Delicious early season tomato that is better tasting and more disease resistant than the popular Early Girl variety. 62 days, indeterminate

Sun Gold – Small, orange hybrid variety with vigorous growth that yields early and bears right through the season. Pop one in your mouth like candy; they’re arguably the sweetest tomato. 57 days, indeterminate

LARGE TOMATOES

Arkansas Traveler – Very flavorful, rose-pink, heirloom variety with 8 ounce fruits that are great for hotter climates. Late season ripeners. 85 days, indeterminate

German Queen – Luscious, sweet pink beefsteak heirloom with incredible flavor and large, meaty fruit. Tall, vigorous potato-leaved plants. 80 days, indeterminate

Persimmon – A vigorous, beefsteak variety with beautiful gold persimmon hue, excellent flavor and very few seeds. 80-90 days, indeterminate

Best of Spring: Staff Favorites

You folks aren't the only ones excited about our upcoming Traditional blend release for 2012. After a period of rest, our Italian varietals have melded beautifully to produce a rich and complex extra virgin olive oil that our entire staff has been eagerly awaiting since our precious Olio Nuovo sold out a few months ago.

Here's a taste of what we'll be feasting on this spring with our new release...

2012 Release Traditional Blend

Good things come to those who wait...we're pretty sure this year's 2012 Traditional blend will be worth it.

Like many Bay Area farmers, our olive harvest last November was light; however, what we've lost in yield may be worth the sacrifice, as we're finding this year's blend extraordinarily flavorful. In fact, the intensity and complexity were so great after milling, we decided to give our signature blend an extra long period of rest to allow the flavors to mellow and render the blend more harmonious.

Our 2012 Traditional Blend extra virgin olive oil is set for release online beginning April 1st and in our San Francisco Ferry Building shop this Friday, March 30th at noon.

Here are some notes from the frantoio on this year's release:

VARIETIES: Frantoio, Leccino, Pendolino, Maurino, Moraiolo, Coratina, Leccio del Corno

APPEARANCE: Grass green at harvest, mellowing to a greenish gold

AROMA: Intense aromas of freshly cut celery and carrot, white cauliflower and sliced artichoke

FLAVOR: Peppery, with notes of fresh green pistachio followed by freshly-harvested, slightly bitter almond and a long, full-bodied finish

ACIDITY: 0.1%

QUALITY: Estate grown and produced; certifed extra virgin by California Olive Oil Council (COOC); certified organic by California Certified Organic Farms (CCOF); unfiltered

EXTRACTION: The McEvoy Ranch frantoio, or olive mill, uses Rapanelli equiment imported from Italy exclusively and is the only mill of its kind in the United States. The freshly harvested olives are crushed by stone and blade mills and the oil is extracted via centrifugation and gravity separation. The result is an extra virgin olive oil of the hightest quality — well balanced, smoothly textured and of unparalleled flavor.

ORCHARD: 80 acres of the 550-acre McEvoy Ranch support more than 18,000 trees in the Marin County hills west of Petaluma, CA.

HARVEST METHODS: Harvested with pneumatic and electric combs, November 2011
